First Step

First Step is a Wayne County non-profit organization that can help victims of domestic and sexual violence. Their 24-hour help line number is 734-722-6800. First Step is LGBTQIA+ positive and takes a firm anti-racism stand and a pro-social justice stance. First Step provides the following free crisis services:

  • 24-hour, 365 days a year, on-call assault response team that comes to you and provides immediate assistance
  • temporary emergency housing for individuals and families touched by domestic and/or sexual violence
  • safety planning (help with how to leave an unsafe situation)
  • support groups (including groups for children and men)
  • counseling
  • info and referrals on legal, financial, medical, housing, transportation, and health care needs
  • educational and recreational activities for children at First Step's emergency shelter
  • transitional housing
  • basic needs for victims (such as food, toys, clothing, birthday gifts, gift cards, books, school supplies, diapers, household goods, transportation, and more)
  • ARK (animals receiving kindness): victims do NOT have to leave their pets behind!

Haven

Haven is an Oakland County non-profit organization that provides help to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. To reach Haven's 24-hour, 7-day a week crisis line dial 248-334-1274 or 877-922-1274. The Haven web site also provides a live chat function here (click "Connect me with a crisis specialist" near the bottom of the page), typically available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. In addition to the crisis line and live chat, Haven offers victims:

  •  24-hour emergency shelter
  • support groups
  • advocacy, and more.

Common Ground

Common Ground is another Oakland County non-profit organization providing assistance to families and children in crisis. Common Ground staffs a 24/7 crisis number: 1-800-231-1127. They also have a 24/7 online chat service, accessible here. Additionally, Common Ground offers the following services:

  • Youth shelter, serving teens age 10 to 17
  • 24/7 crisis intervention services for all ages
  • Psychiatric crisis care and housing
  • Detoxification assistance
  • Mobile crisis unit covering Oakland and Genesee Counties

Common Ground Behavioral Urgent Care Clinic

Michigan residents aged 18 and older can facing an urgent mental health crisis can call can receive telehealth services through the Common Ground Behavioral Health Urgent Care clinic. The clinic accepts private insurance. The cost is $89 for an appointment for those without health care coverage. (For those with Medicaid, services are fully covered.)
